You are cordially invited to attend the 63rd meeting of the Internationales Sachsensymposion, hosted this year at St. John’s College, Durham University in the UK, at the heart of this historic medieval city.
This meeting takes inspiration from the position of Durham within the kingdom of Northumbria. The kingdom lies at the edge of the North Sea, a feature that both divided the Anglo-Saxons from the continent and yet facilitated the interaction and movement of people and objects between the emerging kingdoms of Europe during the 5th to 8thcenturies. It also crucially borders on the northern and western regions of Britain, where the Picts, Scots, the Welsh, British and Irish competed for power and dominance.
We invite you to Durham in 2012 from the 1st to the 6th of September for five days of papers, field trips and events that have this theme at their core. The conference will open with a key note lecture by one of our most esteemed early medieval archaeologists Dame Professor Rosemary Cramp, who has spent a lifetime investigating and providing new insights into the early Christian archaeology of the North East of Britain. Special invited speakers will also explore the archaeology of the territories to the north of Anglo-Saxon England in Pictland and the British kingdoms to the west.
A field trip will take us to the remote holy island of Lindisfarne, a formal conference dinner will be held at Durham Castle, and opportunities will be available to view Durham Cathedral, Durham special manuscript collections and the complete surviving eighth-century church at Escomb.
