In honor of the 1200th anniversary of Charlemagne’s death, The American University of Rome, in partnership with the Istituto Italiano di Studi Germanici and Zètema, will hold a Masterclass aimed at turning Charlemagne into an asset for Rome and increasing his cultural heritage legacies by training Italian specialists of heritage development in:defining Charlemagne in Rome as an asset, ground-truthing the asset, and conceptualizing and marketing the asset.
This is a unique opportunity for a group of 20 professionals, students, and recent graduates to take part in a 5-day Masterclass in the American process of heritage tourism, drawing on a mixture of European and American practice. The results of the program will be presented to the Comune of Rome for use in tourist development during the Conference “Lost renaissance? The legacy of Charlemagne in Rome and its future”, which will be held at the Istituto di Studi Germanici on the last day of the Masterclass.
Call for Participants
The American University of Rome offers a total of 20 scholarships to participate to the Masterclass divided as follows:
- Nr. 10 scholarships for professionals currently working in the cultural field.
- Nr. 5 scholarships for students/recent graduates based in Rome.
- Nr. 5 scholarships for students/recent graduates based outside Rome.

The scholarship includes: participation to the Masterclass, participation to the conference, lunch and light refreshments during the masterclass and conference. For students/recent graduates based outside Rome, the scholarship includes also accommodation.
Eligibility Criteria and Selection Process
The minimum eligibility criteria to apply for the scholarship are:
- Bachelor Degree or equivalent relevant work experience
- High working knowledge of the English language (ex. Level B2 ESOL Cambridge Examination) and Italian Language (ex. CILS Due, B2)
- Good problem solving skills
- Basic knowledge of Cultural Heritage Management issues
- Basic knowledge of Medieval art/archaeology/history/literature

Candidates will be selected based on their curricula and on a motivation letter in English as specified in the application form below. The names of the participants will be announced on April 21st, 2014.
